One of the biggest and most important seed banks in the world is at risk of being paved over by a private housing development.



The facility near the Russian city of St Petersburg houses thousands of varieties of plants that are not found anywhere else in the world.



During World War II, Russian plant scientists literally starved rather than save themselves by eating the seeds stored in this seed bank during a brutal multi-month siege by the Nazis.



To my mind, this act of self-sacrifice was one of the greatest demonstrations of human nobility in history.



Now this one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable collection of living genetic material is going to be destroyed for condos?



They've got to be kidding.
